Today, the terms "rap" and "rapping" are so closely associated with hip-hop music. Many people use these words for Hip Hop music. Roots of Rap Music – Rap and hip – hop music, actually began thousands of years ago in Africa. Village story tellers used to play basic handmade instruments while they told stories and current events. They were knows as “griots”. This style of talking while music is playing is rap music as we know it at its root form. In Africa, The griot is still a major form of communication. So, Rapping can be traced back to its African roots. Evolution of Rap Music - In 1980s - In 1980s, Rap Music began to spread and became a part of the music in various countries. In 1982, the first statement driven raps known as “The Message” was released by flash records. In 1983, the first rap video “Rockit” was released by Herbie Hancock and Grandmaster J. Rockit Experienced huge success over MTV. In 1985, Salt N Pepa make their first appearance to become female rap stars. In 1986, Sampling was born. “Sampling” is basically an art of taking already recorded material and samples it in a new music. . The mid-1980s, there was a great development of hip hop, with the introduction of samples from rock music. In 1990s – In the 1990s, hip hop began to combine with other regional styles such as Southern rap and Atlanta hip hop. It creates a new form of Rap Music. In 1993, a multi platinum gangsta rap hit “The Chronic” was released by Dr. Dre. In 1999, Eminem just shakes up the world of music with “The Slim Shady” music. Hip hop became a best-selling music genre in the mid-1990s and the top selling music genre by 1999. By the 1990s, rap matured from an old-school-style, based on simple lyrics to a new-school-style, based on more complex lyrics. 2000 To Present – The hip-hop music is very popular till now, Its popularity continued through the 2000s. New talents and styles are coming from all over the world. The United States also saw the success of styles such as crunk music. Crunk is a form of music that is based on beats and music more than the lyrics. During the mid-2000s that alternative hip hop secured a place within the mainstream, due in part to the crossover success of artists such as OutKast and, Kanye West. |
